I cannot overemphasize how the following exercise impacted my mental health.
It’s so easy, you’ll probably wonder (a) why you didn’t think of it yourself and (b) why it took you so long.
I cannot take credit for this suggestion. I believe I first heard it from a woman named Isabel Foxen Duke. If you don’t know who she is, it’s very likely worth your time to listen to a few podcast episodes she’s been featured on (like this one and this one) and also to sign up for her mailing list. She sends out great articles and links to interviews with her.
Okay, so here’s the way you become 1000% happier in, basically, a few hours:
STOP FOLLOWING ANYTHING ON SOCIAL MEDIA THAT MAKES YOU FEEL IN ANY WAY BAD ABOUT YOURSELF, LESS THAN, NOT ENOUGH, OR LIKE YOU ARE DOING SOMETHING WRONG.
This includes but is not limited to magazines, television shows, diet gurus, diet doctors, self-proclaimed experts, fitness gurus, the “strong is the new skinny” brigade, etc. etc. effing etc.

The Gift of Unfollowing
Why?
Isn’t all that stuff you’ve been following keeping you motivated?
Maybe.
Only you can answer that question.
For me, it was probably good in the beginning, but the longer I followed and the more different things that inundated me with images of people that were (1) smaller than me, (2) more muscular than me, or (3) eating cleaner than I thought I was, the worse I felt about myself.
And I can tell you where feeling bad about yourself leads-NOWHERE GOOD.
So I challenge you.
Stop it.
Unfollow, unfriend, remove, whatever.
ANYHING and EVERYTHING that leaves you feeling like you aren’t already enough.
You are enough.
You are not broken.
Nothing is wrong with you.
So why the eff are you always feeling that way?
Maybe it’s because of what we are all taking in on a minute to minute basis.
But you are really the one who has most of the control here. It takes a few hours on the first day, and then maybe a few minutes per day for a few weeks after than. But then it’s over.
And you’ll start feeling way better about yourself immediately.
That’s a promise!
P.s. I wrote this blog post in less than ten minutes, so please excuse all of the typos until I can get them fixed. Thanks and love!
P.s.s. I think it goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyway, start following things that make you feel great, including but not limited to people who promote the idea that humans come in all shapes and sizes like Bodyposipanda on Instagram.
I’ve been thinking about doing a major purge on all social media. It really is time.
I’ve did most of my purging of web sites, fb accounts, emails, instagram pages in January of sites that do not serve a positive outlook for my life. It’s quite liberating and I feel so much better about myself and how I am living my life!
Thanks for this post. I also follow Tiasha Slana from Freedom Goddess Collective for amazing self love, body respect and self acceptance tools.
This post is so true. It’s very easy to devalue yourself when your surrounded with social media 24/7
